The furlough effect on state employees has made families to look for alternate jobs for weekends and has changed their day to day priorities. The weekend prayers, kid逞ｴ games and family get-together are being postponed to find small work at Home Depot / Wal-Mart and other graveyard jobs to cover lost pay.
The 10 percent pay cut has forced many families to look for budget cuts and save money for rainy days.
Thoughts
Why not make all California逞ｴ to pay one day salary per month for next one year. This is better then asking only government employees to pay 2 days (1st & 3rd Friday furlough) salary cut for next 2 years.
Programs run by government are also utilized or used by people working in private industry. Government builds bridges, hospitals, airports, runs police, fire stations, senior care and county health care programs. The list is long,
Government should provide subsidies to private companies to start new business in California to generate the revenue. The companies should be given incentives to bring back jobs shipped to overseas companies.
New Gov. Jerry Brown on State Agency
Now New governor Jerry Brown has taken oath in California unions are hoping he takes corrective measures in saving state agencies. Previous governor Arnold with his advisors went after state agency with budget cuts, downsizing, pay cuts and furloughs. Corporate America executives are making inroad into state agency executive position and a new private culture is being implemented across state agencies in California.
New corporate style structures out of turn appointments and promotions for those who follow them and bypassing senior people for promotions have become norm. This has created uneasiness for government staff to follow new management. Each move of management is seen with suspicion.
No longer is government job a safe job and carry excellent benefits. Many stat agencies are cutting on retirement benefits and pension benefits. In today痴 world government job is no secure job. People are wondering after giving so many years in public service they are being cheated by upper management. On the other hand state agency executives have been given job to downsize organization, cut expenses and look for alternative to save from it getting out of service. A tough time for everyone.

The labor unions and state employees tried their best to defeat furlough being in effect.At the end it took Supreme courts directive to put this in effect.
This news is painful to California state workers, the mood of state employees differs from person to person. Some are sad, angry and some are feeling left out and punished for serving government. There are some who hope this furlough period ends soon.
The news of "furloughed two Fridays" a month along with 10 percent pay cut brought state employee's moral down. The one time die hard supporter of government are seriously asking questions, was it worth to work for government? Why are they being punished for serving government?

| Although most of the residents of California are in support of Government employees partly in principle and partly not to
allow disruption in essential services such as DMV, county health care and functioning of state universities. There is a sizable population in California, which does not support the state employees on furlough act. According to them what would state employees will prefer a complete layoff or just 2 days of pay cut. 11:00 AM 2/12/2009 Steve Taft (name changed) used to get a high five figure salary before he was laid off from the job he held for last 20 years in a chip manufacturing company. His entire divisions work was off shored for one third of cost to Asia. He has been jobless for last five months. At present he is managing with small time jobs and occasional consulting opportunities. According to him, State employees should feel safe as they don't loose jobs and moreover their benefits are in effect. However he agrees on the part of hardship it brings on state employees. |
